Mascots are a very special breed. They hop around like lunatics at every home game in an outrageously oversized suit, try to put the visiting team off (standing behind the goal when there's a penalty for the visiting team is a must) while trying to whip the home support into a frenzy.
They getting abused by the away support, soaked in the rain and torn from one side to another by kids that just want a piece of them!
But above all they are dedicated to the case. Hail, rain or snow the elements mean nothing to these brave heroes. With that in mind the first ever League of Ireland Mascot Race will take place on Sunday October 21st at Naas Racecourse. It's a big thank you to the suited-up superstars that keep us entertained at every footy match.
Taking part will be around 8 League of Ireland Mascots, all ready to don the suit, get in gear and run like the wind in order of a good cause.
The good cause in this case is the Irish Cancer Society. I'd been thinking of ways to make money for them after my mum had passed away in November 2016. In 2018, 1 in 4 deaths in Ireland will have been caused by cancer. Every year it accounts for 30% of deaths in this country. One person dies from cancer every hour in Ireland.
Those are alarming stats. Let's face it, we all know someone who has or had cancer. It effects us every day. With over 9,000 Irish people dying per year it's sadly something we have to deal with. Watching someone you love waste away and die in front of you is one of the most harrowing things you could have to go through.
Naas Racecourse who will hold this novelty event have been superb in helping out with the race. From parading the Mascots to the public before the race to presenting the winning trophy in the winners enclosure and helping to promote the event through their own website.
With Paddy Power expected to look after the betting on the day it should prove to be a funny afternoon. The mascots are coming from all over the country, Galway, Cork, Waterford, Kildare, Bray and of course Waterford.
The race itself will take place around 12.30 on the day so the punters will get to see this novelty event kick off the day's racing in style.
More details will follow but if you want to help just check out the Facebook page attached to this website and give to the live fundraiser we have there at present.
